Emergency Dental Services
These three services are the most common treatments for dental emergencies that we see at our emergency dental clinic in Mississauga.
Fillings
For severe toothaches or broken teeth, patients may require a restorative resin filling to protect the integrity of the tooth. Our experienced dentists will perform this procedure promptly and have your smile back in perfect health in no time.
RESTORATIVE FILLINGS
Teeth Extractions
If your tooth has an abscess or has been partially dislodged, you may need it removed. Rockwest Dental Clinic’s emergency dentist will safely and gently extract your tooth and present you with various tooth replacement options such as crowns or dental implants.
TOOTH EXTRACTION
Bleeding Gums
In emergency dental cases where a patient has severely bleeding gums, the solution is typically an emergency teeth cleaning. Our talented dentist will remove the plaque from your gumline and perform a detailed assessment to ensure you don’t have gum disease.
GENERAL DENTISTRY
Emergency Root Canal
A root canal is performed when there is an infection or inflammation in the roots. It is usually a straightforward procedure that will relieve dental pain and save your tooth from requiring extraction.
Root Canal
Broken Dentures
Dentures can break as a result of handling roughly, biting something hard or being dropped. Broken dentures can cause discomfort while eating, drinking, or speaking. Rockwest Dental Clinic will repair your broken dentures promptly.

I have been going to Rockwest Dental for around 10 years and it's always been a great experience. There is never a wait when I arrive, I love the hygienists, especially Tea; it feels like I'm catching up with a friend when I see her. The receptionists are so welcoming(Tonya) as well as Dr. Swaida. He is so kind, and remembers small details about what is going on in your life and truly cares about you. Everyone has a smile on their face and all of them seem to love their job. I definitely recommend Rockwest Dental.

What to do in a Dental Emergency
Here is how you should proceed before you receive treatment for the following dental emergencies:

Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to loosen any debris from between your teeth. If this doesn’t alleviate the ache, take ibuprofen and place a cold compress on your cheek. If the toothache hurts so much that you can’t bite or sleep and over-the-counter pain relievers are not helping, contact Rockwest Dental for an emergency dentist appointment. We will assess the issue and provide a diagnosis and solution.
Broken or Partially Dislodged Tooth
Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. Attempt to recover any pieces of the broken tooth. If there is any bleeding, hold a clean piece of gauze to the area. Use a cold compress to prevent major swelling and take ibuprofen to alleviate any pain. You should always seek help urgently for a broken or partially dislodged tooth.

Dislodged Tooth
Like with a broken or partially dislodged tooth, you should always seek urgent treatment for a fully dislodged tooth. If you are able to find the tooth that has been dislodged, hold it by the top, rinse it well and gently try to place it back in its socket. If you can’t put it in place, put the tooth in a clean container with milk, salted water and saline and bring it with you to your emergency dentist appointment. If you are able to get the natural tooth back in its place within an hour, you may not need a dental implant.
Dislodged Crown
The solution for a dislodged crown is similar to that of a dislodged tooth. With a crown, however, you can simply place it in a small plastic bag to bring it with you to your emergency dentist appointment. Pick up some clove oil from a pharmacy and dab it on the affected tooth to relieve any pain in the meantime.

Loose or Lost Fillings
If you dislodge a filling from your tooth, you should contact your emergency dentist in Mississauga immediately as your gums and nerve endings may be exposed. You can place a tiny wad of chewed-up sugar-free gum in the space until you are ready for your emergency filling. The gum must be sugar-free because other types may irritate the cavity.

Emergency Dental FAQ’s
Check out some frequently asked questions and answers about our emergency dental services. If you have a question that has not been answered relating to your dental emergency, please don’t hesitate to ask us.
Ask a Question
What is a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is an oral health issue that requires urgent care to save a damaged tooth, control an infection or relieve severe pain.
How can I tell if something is a dental emergency?
Refer to the above chart for some questions to ask yourself. Some additional symptoms that may constitute a dental emergency are bleeding gums, bad breath, jaw pain, pus or an abscess and tongue irritation. The best way to tell if something is a dental emergency is to contact Rockwest Dental in Mississauga right away and describe your situation.
How can I tell if a dental emergency is urgent?
Dental emergencies are typically urgent when there is swelling, severe pain and/or bleeding. Additional dental emergencies include knocked-out, chipped or broken teeth, crowns or fillings. Don’t continue to take over-the-counter medicine for a toothache longer than two days without contacting an emergency dentist. The toothache could be the result of a much larger issue that can escalate without immediate treatment.
How should I prepare for an emergency dentist appointment?
Gently rinse your mouth with water. Avoid drinking or eating. Take ibuprofen to ease pain and use a cold compress to ease swelling. Bring the dislodged tooth or crown with you if possible.
What will the emergency dentist do?
The emergency dentist at Rockwest Dental will ask you questions about what happened and how you feel. They will assess your dental/medical history including X-Rays. They will then treat your emergency with painkillers, antibiotics, fillings, restorative work like crowns or even an emergency oral surgery like a root canal or tooth extraction.
How much is an emergency dental treatment?
At Rockwest Dental Clinic, we charge $75 for an emergency exam free. Once we’ve completed the assessment and have properly diagnosed the issue, we will quote for the dental work. The cost range of treatment for the most common dental emergencies are as follows:
• Filling – $150 to $300
• Extraction – $160 to $400
• Tooth Cleaning – $175 to $300
How much is a dental X-Ray?
An X-Ray costs from $25 – $60 at our dental office in Mississauga.
COVID-19 AND EMERGENCY DENTAL SERVICES
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
The main symptoms of Coronavirus are fever and dry coughing. If you experience these symptoms or have travelled recently, you will need to quarantine for two weeks.
How is COVID-19 transmitted?
Coronavirus is transmitted through droplets by sneezing, coughing or through saliva or discharge from the nose. The way it is transmitted makes it very important to follow strict protocol at dental clinics as dentists are working closely with patients’ mouths. Patients can avoid COVID-19 by staying away from large groups, always wearing a mask when outside the home, washing your hands frequently or using hand sanitizer when you’re unable to wash yours hands and not touching your nose, mouth and eyes.
What is the protocol for emergency dental services during COVID-19?
To protect you, other patients and the team at Rockwest Dental Clinic from Coronavirus, we’ve laid out the following guidelines:
• Clients must wash their hands with soap when entering the emergency dental office
• The door handles will be disinfected upon entering and leaving
• Disinfectants will be sprayed on surfaces frequently
• Patients must wear a mask when not being treated

Who is at a high risk for COVID-19?
People with conditions like diabetes type 1 and 2, heart disease and lung diseases like asthma, emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis or people over the age of 85 years old are at a higher risk for COVID-19. Exercise additional caution if you fall into any of these groups.
